Algiers, Algeria | July 2, 2025 — Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui chaired a high-level government meeting focused on key national development priorities, including the expansion of the iron and steel sector, enhancement of electronic communications infrastructure, university preparedness, and improvements in maritime and air transport services for the Algerian diaspora.
Central to the session was the review of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit development—one of the world’s largest untapped reserves—and the construction of a 950-kilometer mining railway connecting Béchar to Tindouf and the Gara Djebilet site. This megaproject is a cornerstone for building an integrated domestic iron and steel industry, underpinning Algeria’s ambitions for industrial sovereignty and economic diversification. It aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision of harnessing Algeria’s natural resource potential to drive long-term industrial transformation and sustainable growth.
The cabinet also examined comprehensive plans for expanding Algeria’s electronic communications infrastructure, an essential component of the country’s digital transformation agenda. Initiatives under consideration include strengthening national telecom networks, safeguarding submarine cables, and scaling digital capacity to ensure secure, inclusive, and modern connectivity across Algeria.
Ahead of the upcoming university academic year, the government discussed measures to enhance student services and campus management. The focus was on improving quality, accessibility, and efficiency in university housing, transportation, and learning environments, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering optimal educational conditions.
Another priority was optimizing maritime and air transport services during the peak summer travel season, especially for Algerian expatriates returning home. Prime Minister Larbaoui called on port and airport authorities to maintain high service standards, minimize administrative and cargo handling delays, and provide professional, welcoming experiences for travelers. The government stressed adherence to travel schedules and urged all stakeholders to improve logistics quality during this critical period.
