Google has expanded its Google Pay (also known as Google Wallet) service to Lebanon and Oman, allowing Android users to make secure contactless payments in stores, apps, and on the web. Google Pay employs multiple security layers, including device-specific virtual card numbers (tokens) linked to dynamic security codes that change with every transaction, ensuring safer payments.
In Oman, Google Pay can be used for purchases on supported websites and mobile apps, although peer-to-peer payments and service payments are currently unavailable. Sohar International Bank is the first Omani bank to enable Google Pay, allowing customers with international debit, credit, and prepaid cards to make contactless payments via Android phones. Users must add their cards to the Google Wallet app to use the service.
Oman joined the GCC’s mobile payment ecosystem last year with Apple Pay and Samsung Pay launches. Google Pay is compatible with Android devices running version 9 or higher, making it accessible to a wide user base.
Mohammed bin Saif al Manji of TechOneFive highlighted that Oman’s digital payments sector is rapidly advancing due to Central Bank of Oman initiatives promoting cashless transactions, mobile wallets, QR payments, and secure card tokenization. The addition of Google Pay further supports Oman Vision 2040’s goals of digital transformation and economic modernization by providing convenient, secure contactless payment options.
