Pakistan Initiates Major Restructuring of National Information Technology Board (NITB)

In a significant policy move, the federal government of Pakistan has officially begun restructuring the National Information Technology Board (NITB) to revamp the country’s digital governance ecosystem and accelerate technology initiatives under the Digital Pakistan framework.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) approved comprehensive administrative reforms aimed at addressing operational inefficiencies, bureaucratic delays, and capacity gaps that have slowed progress in recent years. Officials describe this as part of a broader agenda to transform government tech institutions into more agile, accountable, and innovation-driven entities.

Following a review of NITB’s performance against Pakistan’s evolving digital needs—particularly in public service delivery, automation, and cybersecurity—the restructuring includes updates to leadership roles, organizational hierarchy, performance metrics, and hiring policies. The government aims for faster execution of e-governance projects, expansion of digital ID systems, automation of citizen services, and stronger cybersecurity.

The reforms may also align NITB’s governance with international IT management standards, improving coordination with other national and provincial digital transformation bodies.

This restructuring is timely as Pakistan seeks to upgrade public infrastructure and attract digital investment. The overhaul of NITB is expected to improve digital public services, enhance transparency, and boost confidence in government-led tech reforms. It demonstrates a stronger governmental commitment to the Digital Pakistan vision by making the digital ecosystem more efficient and accessible for citizens and businesses alike.
