Vietnam has climbed to 10th place worldwide for fixed broadband internet speeds, its highest position since Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index began in 2017. The achievement also marks the fastest median speed Vietnam has recorded since first connecting to the global internet in 1997, placing the nation among the world’s top 20 for both mobile and fixed broadband performance.
In Ookla’s Speedtest Awards for the first half of 2025, Vietnam’s telecom leaders earned global recognition. Viettel ranked third worldwide in the Fastest Mobile Network category, surpassing Singapore’s Singtel, while VinaPhone secured second place for the Fastest 5G Mobile Network, just behind a UAE operator.
Vietnam’s telecom sector has advanced dramatically since the 1990s, evolving from a latecomer into a global contender. Milestones include Viettel’s rapid rollout of commercial 5G services using locally developed equipment following the 5G spectrum auction, and VNPT Technology’s October 2024 launch of Vietnam’s first Wi-Fi 7 device, capable of 10 Gbps speeds. FPT also introduced Wi-Fi 7 and XGS-PON packages with symmetrical 10 Gbps connections.
Guided by the Politburo’s Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, Vietnam aims to establish world-class digital infrastructure by 2030, with 15 submarine cables totaling 350 Tbps, including two wholly Vietnam-controlled systems, alongside terrestrial fiber routes. Already, the country operates six submarine cables with 80 Tbps capacity, including the recently commissioned ADC and SJC2 systems. In August 2025, VNPT assumed control of the VSTN terrestrial fiber-optic system, boosting national capacity for 5G and high-speed internet.
Broadband penetration is also expanding rapidly: fixed subscriptions reached 24.4 per 100 inhabitants by June 2025, while household fiber penetration soared to 85.3%, far exceeding the global average of 60%. This momentum is fueled by growing demand for online learning, streaming, gaming, IoT, and virtual collaboration tools.
Vietnam’s steady rise underscores its transformation into a digital powerhouse, leveraging innovation, infrastructure investments, and policy support to secure a place among the world’s top internet economies.
