Iraq is continuing efforts to strengthen its telecommunications sector following discussions between Asaib Ahl al-Haq Secretary-General Sheikh Qais Al-Khazali and Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri on the future development of the country’s digital infrastructure.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the meeting focused on ongoing initiatives aimed at modernizing telecommunications services, expanding infrastructure capabilities, and improving the overall quality of communications services available to citizens.
During the discussions, Minister Al-Yasiri outlined the Ministry’s current plans and projects designed to advance the sector, highlighting efforts to improve network performance, enhance service delivery, and support broader digital transformation objectives across Iraq.
The meeting also reviewed challenges facing the telecommunications industry and explored opportunities to accelerate infrastructure deployment and technological advancement throughout the country.
Iraq’s telecommunications sector has undergone significant changes in recent years as demand for mobile broadband, digital services, and connectivity continues to rise. The government has increasingly prioritized digital transformation initiatives as part of wider economic modernization efforts, recognizing telecommunications infrastructure as a key enabler of public services, business growth, and investment attraction.
The discussions come as Iraq continues to evaluate pathways for expanding network capacity, improving service quality, and supporting emerging technologies that can contribute to economic development and greater digital inclusion.
Industry observers note that strengthening telecommunications infrastructure remains essential for enabling e-government services, expanding digital commerce, and supporting future technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and next-generation mobile networks.
As digital adoption accelerates across the region, Iraq’s ability to modernize its telecommunications ecosystem will play an important role in enhancing connectivity, improving citizen services, and supporting long-term economic diversification goals.
Editor’s Note
Iraq’s telecommunications sector remains one of the country’s most important digital infrastructure priorities. While many regional markets are advancing toward 5G, cloud ecosystems, and AI-enabled services, Iraq’s immediate opportunity lies in strengthening foundational network infrastructure and improving service quality. Continued political support and coordinated investment will be critical if the country is to close connectivity gaps, attract digital investment, and build the foundations for a more competitive digital economy.
