General Motors Africa and Middle East has been recognised by Saudi government entities for its contribution to Internet of Things capabilities, with its OnStar connected vehicle platform highlighted as the core technology supporting its position in the connected vehicles category.
The recognition came from Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space & Technology Commission, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Digital Government Authority.
GM said it was the only automaker recognised in the connected vehicles category, highlighting the growing role of software, connectivity and digital services within Saudi Arabia’s mobility ecosystem.
OnStar provides connected services across GM vehicles
OnStar serves as the foundation of GM’s connected vehicle strategy across supported Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac models.
The platform enables services including over-the-air software and cybersecurity updates, in-vehicle applications, remote vehicle access and vehicle insights.
These capabilities allow supported vehicles to receive updates and new functionality through software while providing owners with greater visibility and remote access to their vehicles.
For GM, the platform also provides the connectivity layer required to introduce more advanced digital and driver assistance capabilities over time.

Connected vehicles become part of wider IoT ecosystem
The recognition places connected vehicles within Saudi Arabia’s broader development of IoT technologies and digital infrastructure.
Modern connected vehicles increasingly operate as software-enabled endpoints, exchanging information with cloud platforms and using connectivity to support applications ranging from remote services and diagnostics to software updates.
GM is positioning OnStar as the underlying platform for this transition, with connectivity supporting both existing services and future vehicle capabilities.
The company said it intends to continue working with Saudi stakeholders to adapt its global technologies to local roads, regulations and customer requirements.
Super Cruise planned as next stage
GM is also preparing for the phased introduction of Super Cruise, its hands-free advanced driver assistance technology, in the region.
The technology will be introduced on compatible roads and remains subject to regulatory approvals.
GM is positioning Super Cruise as a progression from the connectivity and software infrastructure already established through OnStar.
The company stressed that increasingly automated driving capabilities depend on several components working together, including connected services, software, vehicle engineering, safety validation, infrastructure and regulatory cooperation.
“Autonomy will not arrive as a single feature,” De La Cruz said. “It will be the result of connected services, software, vehicle engineering, safety validation, local infrastructure and trusted partnerships working together.”
Why this matters
Saudi Arabia’s IoT development is increasingly extending beyond conventional smart devices and industrial applications into connected mobility.
Vehicles equipped with persistent connectivity, cloud services and over-the-air software capabilities can become part of a wider digital ecosystem, creating foundations for more sophisticated safety, mobility and driver assistance services.
GM’s recognition is therefore notable because it highlights the automotive sector as another component of the Kingdom’s expanding connected infrastructure. OnStar provides an existing commercial foundation, while technologies such as Super Cruise could represent the next stage if regulatory and infrastructure requirements are met.

The distinction between current and future capabilities is important. OnStar services are already available through supported Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, while the regional introduction of Super Cruise remains planned, phased and subject to regulatory approval.
The next significant development will therefore be regulatory progress around advanced driver assistance and the identification of compatible roads for Super Cruise.
More broadly, Saudi Arabia provides an interesting market for connected mobility because the evolution of vehicles toward software-defined platforms increasingly intersects with telecom networks, cloud infrastructure, IoT regulation and digital government. GM’s ability to integrate those elements locally will be a more meaningful measure of progress than recognition alone.
