Ericsson announced on Monday that Vodafone Egypt has become the first mobile operator to deploy its triple-band radio, supporting both FDD and TDD spectrum, as part of its network modernization and capacity expansion initiative.
Vodafone Egypt is utilizing the new Radio 4466 product to support 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G across the 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz FDD, and 2600 MHz TDD spectrum layers through a single unit, rather than separate units for each band. Ericsson claims this marks the first live deployment of a triple-band radio for these bands.
By consolidating three bands in one radio, the deployment reduces equipment on towers, enhances network performance, and lowers power consumption. According to Ericsson, this innovation cuts overall energy consumption of Vodafone Egypt’s network by up to 15%, while also reducing site footprint and deployment time.
“This new triple-band radio unit from Ericsson gives us better cost efficiency, faster deployment of 4G/5G services, reduced energy consumption, and less tower load,” said Catalin Buliga, Technology Director at Vodafone Egypt.
“Through advanced optimization algorithms and intelligent resource allocation, we can unlock new levels of efficiency, ensuring that every bit of bandwidth is utilized to its fullest potential,” added Håkan Cervell, VP and Head of Ericsson Saudi Arabia and Egypt at Ericsson Middle East and Africa.
