Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), Telecom Egypt, and the National Telecommunications Institute (NTI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese telecom company Hengtong to establish a $15 million fibre optic cable factory.
The signing ceremony, attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, took place during the China-Africa Cooperation Forum Summit in Beijing. This will be Hengtong’s second factory in Egypt, located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), covering 40,000 square meters with an annual production capacity of 3 million kilometres of fibre optic cables. Forty percent of this production will be exported to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
This partnership aims to enhance Egypt’s telecommunications infrastructure and boost export potential. Additionally, Hengtong will collaborate with the NTI to create a training academy focused on fibre optic communications, providing certification for Egyptian youth in advanced fibre optic technologies.
Hengtong and Telecom Egypt will also launch a training programme for students of WE Applied Technology Schools, offering hands-on experience in fibre optic cable use. Moreover, the agreement includes a project to install fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks for 2 million housing units in Egypt, expanding broadband access and improving connectivity for residents.
