Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, announced a notable increase in the telecommunications sector’s contribution to Egypt’s GDP, rising from 3.2 percent six years ago to 5.8 percent in the 2023/2024 fiscal year.
During his speech at the Tech Heritage – IBM Business Partners Forum, commemorating IBM’s 70 years in Egypt, Talaat highlighted a remarkable 54 percent year-over-year growth in Egypt’s outsourcing exports. The country has also attracted five global companies to establish mobile and tablet manufacturing facilities, generating over 40 percent in added value.
Talaat further noted Egypt’s significant improvement in fixed internet speed rankings in Africa, rising from 40th place six years ago to first place two years ago, a position it has maintained since. He also emphasized Egypt’s advancement on the World Bank’s Government Digital Transformation Readiness Index, moving from category “C” to category “A.” Additionally, Egypt now ranks among the top 12 countries for cybersecurity.
The outsourcing sector has expanded substantially, with the number of professionals providing digital services increasing from 90,000 to over 140,000 in just two years. “The outsourcing field has diversified, covering a broad range of services—from the early call centers established 25 years ago to advanced sectors like software development, electronic circuit design, semiconductors, and embedded automotive software,” Talaat explained.
He also pointed out that Egypt has climbed 49 places on the Government AI Readiness Index. Since launching the Digital Egypt Innovation Centers initiative in 2019, the number of centers has expanded from three to 23, with one in each governorate nationwide.
