Visa, the global leader in digital payments, has partnered with Fonepay, Nepal’s leading payment network, to launch the Scan to Pay solution for international travelers. This collaboration allows incoming tourists to use Visa credentials to make secure and seamless payments in Nepal via Fonepay’s QR payment system.
With Visa’s Scan to Pay solution, travelers can now use their Visa cards at over 1.5 million QR-enabled merchants across Nepal. International visitors who have tokenized their Visa credentials in digital wallet apps will soon be able to scan a Fonepay QR code to make payments in Nepal.
Sabbir Ahmed, Visa’s Country Manager for Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to partner with Fonepay to enable consumers and tourists in Nepal to use Visa cards to scan and pay digitally anywhere, everywhere. This milestone in our partnership with Fonepay will bring more innovative, simple, and secure ways to pay.”
Diwas Sapkota, CEO of Fonepay, highlighted the significance of the partnership in expanding Fonepay’s QR Scheme as the preferred cross-border payment method in Nepal. “This collaboration will accelerate digital payment adoption and benefit merchants of all sizes, while driving financial inclusion across Nepal,” Sapkota said.
QR codes, which are widely used across Nepal and Asia, offer a quick and secure way for Visa cardholders to make cashless payments at over a million merchant outlets. This system eliminates the need for POS machines for small businesses while enhancing checkout speed and fraud protection for large retailers.
Visa has been working closely with banks and partners in Nepal to enhance digital payment adoption. The integration of Visa cards with Fonepay further solidifies its commitment to digitizing Nepal’s payment systems, ensuring more convenient and secure payment methods for consumers and merchants alike.
