Algeria Launches Nationwide Digital Platform to Boost Blood Donation and Healthcare Solidarity

In a significant step to enhance healthcare solidarity across Algeria, the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC) officially launched a nationwide digital platform for blood donors. The innovative system aims to centralize and streamline blood donation efforts, ensuring a continuous supply of vital blood platelets for patients nationwide, especially those battling cancer.

The platform facilitates emergency coordination across wilayas (provinces) by granting hospitals immediate access to donor profiles—a crucial advantage during medical emergencies where time is critical. It registers essential personal data of voluntary donors, improving collaboration between healthcare providers and the public, particularly when rare blood types or platelet transfusions are urgently needed.

Ibtissem Hamlaoui, President of the ONSC, highlighted the platform’s role in transforming blood donation from sporadic acts into a structured, institutionalized movement of national solidarity. Special attention has been given to wilayas hosting cancer treatment centers, where platelet demand is especially high for children undergoing chemotherapy.

Coinciding with World Blood Donor Day on June 14, a national awareness campaign was launched under the slogan: “Give your blood, offer hope—together, through our blood, we save lives.” The launch event at Place 1er Mai in Algiers was organized in partnership with the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA).

At the event, Lahcen Birech, a hematology resident and CRA member, emphasized the life-saving impact of blood donation, noting that a single donation can save up to three lives. Amira Bendi, Vice-President of the Scientific Association of Pharmacy Students at the University of Algiers, stressed that blood donation is both a vital act of kindness and a public health necessity.

Donor Wahiba shared her personal motivation: “I feel like I’m doing something meaningful. You may not know who you’re helping—but you know you’re saving someone’s life. This is how I show solidarity with the sick.”
