Algiers, Algeria — July 2, 2025 — Algeria has achieved a significant advancement in the global digital landscape, rising 15 positions to rank 74th in the latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Development Index published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in June 2025. This marks a substantial improvement from its previous rank of 89th, according to the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
The ITU’s ICT Development Index, recognized as the foremost global benchmark for assessing digital progress, evaluates countries using a comprehensive composite of connectivity indicators. Key metrics include widespread internet access at both household and individual levels and the efficiency and affordability of internet use across various sectors.
Algeria scored an impressive 86.1 points on the index, surpassing the global average of 78 points, the Arab regional average of 77.6 points, the African average of 56.1 points, and even outperforming the average score for upper-middle-income countries, which stands at 81.1 points.
This marked improvement reflects Algeria’s robust national efforts to expand digital access and bridge the digital divide. The government’s strategic investments in digital infrastructure, education, and services have contributed to more inclusive development and wider connectivity across the country.
According to the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, this progress “reflects the tangible outcomes of the visionary strategy outlined by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at extending the reach of information and communication technologies across the country’s vast territory to the benefit of all citizens.”
