Karnali, Nepal — Nepal Telecom’s Karnali Provincial Directorate in Surkhet is accelerating efforts to enhance digital connectivity across Karnali Province, extending 4G and fiber internet coverage to some of Nepal’s most remote regions.
According to Dr. Kamal Lamichhane, Director of the Provincial Directorate, the company has already established communication infrastructure in 37 municipalities, with ongoing surveys in an additional 50 municipalities to identify new expansion sites. “We are focused on strengthening network connectivity in rural areas and delivering services to remote settlements,” he said.
Dr. Lamichhane highlighted that once the Kohalpur–Surkhet 132 kV transmission line becomes operational, it will significantly ease the rollout of fiber internet services. Preparations are also underway to extend connectivity to Chingad Rural Municipality and to intensify work in Dailekh, Kalikot, Jumla, and Sinja districts through localized technical outreach.
Under the national expansion plan, Base Transceiver Station (BTS) networks have been launched in 10 new locations, including Upper Dolpa, Rukum Paschim, Jajarkot, and Lekhfarsa in Surkhet. Reliable solar power and electrification remain critical for sustaining these services — with advance payments made to the Nepal Electricity Authority for electrifying 30 additional sites.
Nepal Telecom has already connected market centers in 16 remote local levels, supporting the province’s “Digital Karnali Conclave” vision. In areas like Mudkechula (Dolpa), services are being extended via BTS infrastructure and may be supplemented by Ring Net technology if needed.
Dr. Lamichhane confirmed that 4G coverage is expanding in and around Surkhet and is expected to reach Hilsa in Humla by the end of 2025, marking a major milestone in Nepal’s mission to bridge the digital divide.
