Better Digital Awareness Key to Preserving Family Values, Say Experts

MUSCAT – October 27, 2025: As Oman’s digital connectivity deepens, experts are calling on families to strengthen awareness around technology use to safeguard cultural identity and social cohesion. They stress that responsible digital engagement — particularly among children and youth — is essential to preserving traditional family values amid rapid technological change.

Specialists warn that excessive screen time and online advertising can fuel overspending and behavioural issues, urging households to establish clear technology-use rules to curb social and financial pressures. They also highlight the role of schools, media, and parents in fostering balanced digital habits that encourage critical thinking and civic awareness.

Dr Radhiya bint Sulaiman al Habsi, Assistant Professor at the University of Nizwa, noted that Oman’s education system plays a central role in shaping responsible digital behaviour. “Rising literacy levels have helped parents value education that strengthens family cohesion and practical parenting skills,” she said. Curriculum initiatives promoting citizenship and cultural identity have also encouraged open intergenerational dialogue about technology’s impact.

Dr Salem bin Humaid al Shuaili, Director of AI and Advanced Technologies Projects at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, cited the ministry’s Digital 2024 report, showing 4.58 million Internet users in Oman and 97.8% penetration—with most accessing the Internet via smartphones. While praising technology’s role in maintaining connection during the pandemic, he cautioned that “unregulated screen time can erode direct communication and increase household tensions.”

Dr Nasser bin Mohammed al Awfi, social researcher at the University of Nizwa, described today’s youth as a generation of “digital children” navigating both traditional and virtual worlds. He urged parents to guide their children toward educational and heritage-based content, warning that excessive screen exposure risks isolation and diminished social skills.

Experts collectively agree that while technology has strengthened family connectivity, it must evolve alongside digital consumer awareness and cultural consciousness. Sustaining Oman’s family values, they conclude, depends on using digital tools not to replace, but to enhance communication, learning, and national identity.
