Egypt Tops Africa’s Gaming Market with $368 Million in 2025 Revenue

Cairo, November 3, 2025 — Egypt has emerged as Africa’s leading gaming market, generating an estimated $368 million in revenue and attracting over 20 million players, according to the Nigerian Gaming and Esports Report by Maliyo Games. The report highlights Africa’s growing $2.1 billion gaming industry, supported by a player base of 349 million gamers across the continent.

Following Egypt, South Africa recorded $278 million in revenue from 26.5 million players, while Nigeria leads in overall player numbers, boasting 46.5 million gamers who generate between $250–$300 million annually. Notably, 90% of Nigerian gamers play on mobile, underscoring the platform’s dominance in the region’s gaming landscape.

Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire are rising markets, generating $46 million and $31.9 million, respectively, as Africa’s digital entertainment sector continues to expand.

Esports on the Rise

Africa’s esports industry is currently valued at around $40 million, projected to surpass $60 million by 2025. South Africa leads with revenues between $7–$10 million and up to 3 million viewers, followed by Egypt with $5–$7 million and nearly 6 million viewers. Nigeria, despite its massive population, ranks third, generating $3–$6 million and drawing 1–3 million esports fans.

Maliyo Games founder Hugo Obi credited Africa’s progress to early pioneers who have overcome structural and institutional barriers. “Our desire to play, connect, and create is as vital to our humanity as our need for shelter,” Obi said. “Those needs are now being met in digital spaces where controllers and smartphones serve as portals to competition, collaboration, and community.”

With expanding broadband access, mobile gaming innovation, and rising investor interest, Africa’s gaming and esports sectors are poised for unprecedented growth, positioning the continent as a major player in the global digital entertainment economy.
