November 2025 — Thunes, the global cross-border payments platform, and the Ecobank Group, one of Africa’s largest pan-African financial institutions, have launched a collaboration to deliver instant, borderless payments across Sub-Saharan Africa, empowering millions of individuals and businesses to participate more actively in the digital economy.
The partnership builds on a 2024 memorandum of understanding between Ecobank and TransferTo (Thunes’ parent company), aiming to modernize Africa’s financial access and cross-border payment systems. This latest phase integrates banking and fintech infrastructure on a large scale — enabling instant money transfers, faster settlements, and wider liquidity access across borders.
The rollout will extend across Ecobank’s 32-country footprint, connecting its customers to Thunes’ Direct Global Network, which spans 130 countries and links more than 7 billion bank accounts and mobile wallets. The initiative’s first operational market is Togo, where Ecobank customers can now receive real-time payments from international remittance partners.
Peter De Caluwe, CEO and Co-founder of Thunes, said: “Our collaboration with Ecobank represents a major step forward in how we power payments across Africa. Together, we’re enabling faster, more reliable liquidity access and building the foundations of a truly digital economy.”
Jeremy Awori, CEO of Ecobank Group, added: “By combining Ecobank’s borderless banking network with Thunes’ fintech innovation, we are driving financial inclusion and transforming access to real-time financial services across the continent.”
This partnership marks a major milestone in Africa’s financial integration, creating seamless connections between fintech and traditional banking systems to boost economic inclusion and digital growth.
