The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has banned Grameenphone from selling new SIM cards, citing the operator’s failure to ensure acceptable quality of service. The directive applies until further notice and affects the country’s largest mobile network operator.
Confirming the decision, BTRC Vice-Chairman Subrata Roy Maitra said the regulator had formally instructed Grameenphone to stop new SIM sales. According to the regulator, the operator has been unable to meet required service standards, particularly in internet and voice services.
BTRC stated that customers have been facing frequent call drops and voice disruptions, indicating substandard network performance. The regulator emphasized that ensuring quality of service is a fundamental obligation for mobile operators, and continued non-compliance prompted the enforcement action.
The ban highlights growing regulatory scrutiny over service quality in Bangladesh’s telecom sector, where consumer complaints related to network reliability and performance have been rising.
