Saudi Arabia Reports Record Telecom Traffic During Hajj as Mobile Data Usage Surges

Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) has reported a significant increase in telecommunications traffic during the 2026 Hajj season, highlighting the strength and resilience of the Kingdom’s digital infrastructure as millions of pilgrims gathered across the holy sites.

According to CST, telecommunications networks successfully handled unprecedented levels of voice and data traffic during peak pilgrimage periods, supported by extensive infrastructure investments and advanced network management capabilities.

The Commission reported that mobile internet speeds reached 361 Mbps during the Hajj season, while data consumption levels continued to rise sharply as pilgrims increasingly relied on mobile applications, navigation services, digital communications, and online platforms throughout their journey.

One of the most notable milestones was recorded on the Day of Arafah, when individual daily data usage exceeded more than twice the global average, reflecting the growing role of digital services in facilitating the pilgrimage experience.

Network performance remained stable despite the massive concentration of users in a limited geographic area. CST said telecommunications networks successfully processed more than 21.3 million voice calls on the 8th of Dul Hijjah, demonstrating the sector’s ability to maintain service quality during periods of exceptionally high demand.

Saudi Arabia has continued to invest heavily in telecommunications infrastructure, including 5G deployment, fiber connectivity, cloud services, and artificial intelligence-driven network optimization. These investments have enabled operators to support large-scale events while maintaining high levels of service reliability and user experience.

The Hajj season serves as one of the world’s most demanding telecommunications environments, requiring operators and government agencies to coordinate closely to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for millions of visitors from around the globe.

CST noted that advanced digital infrastructure and smart technologies played an important role in supporting crowd management, public safety, logistics coordination, and communication services during the pilgrimage.
