Iran, Omantel, and Pishgaman Partner to Establish Data Transit Corridor

Iran’s state-owned Telecommunication Infrastructure Company (TIC) has signed a memorandum of agreement with Omantel and Iranian infrastructure firm Pishgaman to create a data transit corridor between Iran and Oman. The collaboration will enhance data capacity to Oman to 4.5 Gbps by optimizing existing infrastructure.

The partnership aims to strengthen Iran’s connectivity to international networks, particularly through its southern route to Oman, ensuring more stable access to global data centers. Additionally, using Iran’s northern routes for transit will diversify and secure data transmission to Europe.

This initiative is part of the Iranian government’s broader plan to create the “Iran Corridor,” a regional data transit hub. By utilizing Iran as a central transit point, the plan intends to reduce the time and cost of data transfers between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, offering an alternative to longer sea routes.

TIC highlighted the potential for co-investment in interregional cable systems and emphasized Iran’s strategic position at the crossroads of key Trans-Eurasian corridors, including those linking the Middle East, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Indian Ocean, the Caspian Sea, and the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea. This project aims to increase the country’s role in regional data transit while boosting its international connectivity.
