Oman’s leading service provider Omantel and Chinese technology firm FiberHome have inaugurated a joint Research & Development Centre focused on pioneering intelligent solutions for next-generation fibre networks and telecommunications technologies. The centre aims to blend academic expertise from institutions like Wuhan University and FiberHome’s research hubs with Omantel’s operational experience and local partnerships, accelerating innovation tailored to regional market needs.
Highlighting their collaboration, Omantel and FiberHome recently completed a successful live trial of 50GPON technology, delivering speeds up to 50 gigabits per second—ten times faster than current fibre standards. This breakthrough underscores the potential to support ultra-high-speed connectivity essential for edge computing, artificial intelligence, smart cities, and Industry 4.0 initiatives critical to the digital economy.
The R&D centre will focus on developing intelligent telecom network operation and maintenance solutions, creating functional prototypes for practical deployment. Omantel views this partnership as a strategic milestone in its innovation journey, placing advanced technology at the core of Oman’s economic and social development goals.
