The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman has highlighted the vital role of proper internal telecommunications wiring in ensuring high-quality, uninterrupted digital services in residential and commercial buildings across the Sultanate.
As part of a public awareness campaign, TRA noted that poor internal wiring is the primary cause of subscriber complaints nationwide. The Authority urged property owners, developers, and service providers to follow its issued technical guidelines that specify installation standards based on building types—single-storey homes, multi-storey buildings, commercial properties, and residential compounds.
Key recommendations include:
- Single-storey residences: Use CAT-6 or higher copper cables from main distribution boxes to telecom sockets; dedicated cables for Wi-Fi access points, TVs, security cameras, and entrances to support smart home features.
- Multi-storey buildings: Install main distribution boxes on ground floors linked to boxes on each level via vertical conduits; larger buildings should have dedicated telecom rooms; each unit to have individual distribution boxes connected through structured cabling.
- Commercial buildings: Require dedicated telecom rooms for efficient network management.
- Residential compounds: Establish central telecom rooms connected by optical fiber to all units, ensuring high-speed and quality data services.
The TRA emphasized adherence to these standards to build resilient internal networks vital for Oman’s digital transformation. Failure to comply risks poor service coverage and degraded user experience inside buildings.
