Nepal’s 4G User Base Surpasses 25.6 Million, Mobile Broadband Penetration Hits 87.9%

According to the latest MIS report from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) for Ashar 2082, Nepal now has over 25.6 million 4G users, reflecting a monthly increase of approximately 154,000 subscribers. Mobile broadband penetration has reached 87.90% of the population, demonstrating widespread adoption of fourth-generation technology across the country.

Nepal Telecom (NTC) leads with around 14 million 4G users, gaining over 108,000 subscribers in the last month, while Ncell serves about 11.6 million users with a monthly increase of nearly 46,000. Both companies provide GSM-based 4G services nationwide and offer carrier aggregation technology to improve speed, reduce interference, and lower latency.

Despite growth in 4G adoption, the NTA notes that there is room for improvement in service quality, particularly in voice and data performance. Some users continue to rely on older 2G or 3G networks due to device limitations, lack of awareness, or concerns about battery and data usage.

Looking ahead, Nepal Telecom plans to phase out its 2G service on 1800 MHz, and Ncell intends to discontinue its 3G network by 2025, paving the way for 4G and future 5G connectivity. Both providers offer 4G SIM cards with VoLTE support, enhancing call quality with HD voice.

As Nepal’s telcos prepare for 5G, the country’s digital landscape is poised for further transformation, with 4G currently serving as the backbone of mobile broadband connectivity.
