MUSCAT: Sense, a US-based leader in smart energy technology, will open a Research & Development (R&D) facility in Oman to support deployment and localization of its machine-learning-powered energy monitoring solutions. The Oman Investment Authority (OIA), an investor in Sense, highlighted this as part of efforts to adapt the technology to Omani conditions and optimize energy consumption tracking nationwide.
Sense’s Home Energy Monitor, which initially reached over 100,000 US homes, tracks real-time household energy use to reduce waste and lower bills. The company also integrates its technology into smart meters, enhancing utilities’ grid management and customer engagement.
The partnership includes field trials with local energy providers to improve grid efficiency and meet rising demand. Sense’s expansion aligns with Oman’s National Smart Meter Programme, overseen by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APRS), aiming to install around 1.2 million smart meters by end of 2025.
Smart meters enable consumers to access real-time usage data, improve billing accuracy, and support demand-response programs. Utilities benefit from better detection of losses, tampering, and power quality issues, boosting operational efficiency and enabling scalable, resilient electrification.
OIA emphasized the R&D center will contribute to Oman’s economy and create jobs for Omani citizens, reinforcing the country’s commitment to climate innovation and digital energy infrastructure.
