PTA Nears Launch of Satellite Internet Services with New Single-License Framework

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is in the final stages of enabling satellite internet services nationwide, with licenses expected to be issued within one to two weeks to companies completing registration requirements. A new Satellite Directorate has been established at PTA headquarters in Islamabad under the Wireless Division to manage licensing and regulatory compliance.

PTA has prepared a streamlined single-license format for satellite internet providers, replacing the need for multiple Local Loop (LL) and Long Distance and International (LDI) licenses. Under the new framework, companies registered with the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) will be eligible for a national permit covering operations across Pakistan.

The move, aligned with the Telecom Policy 2015, aims to simplify processes and attract major players, including Starlink and several Chinese firms that have expressed interest in entering the market. The government has accelerated efforts to finalise the regulatory framework, directing relevant agencies to complete rules, regulations, and license conditions promptly.

A consultant report from PSARB has been submitted to PTA and other authorities, detailing proposed regulations and licensing criteria. Once approved, the system is expected to fast-track satellite internet deployment, boosting competition and connectivity in Pakistan.
