Iraq has taken a historic step in advancing its digital infrastructure with the signing of a contract to build the country’s first government data centers for commercial use. The agreement, signed in Baghdad between the General Communications and Information Company and Nokia International Company, was announced under the patronage of Minister of Communications Dr. Hayam El-Yassery.
The new data centers will be developed at Al-Tansar and Al-Rashid (Sinak) agencies, serving government entities, private institutions, and the wider private sector. For the first time, Iraqi citizens’ and companies’ data will be stored domestically, ensuring compliance with international standards while implementing advanced measures for security, reliability, and credibility.
Minister El-Yassery emphasized that the initiative is a crucial step toward strengthening Iraq’s digital sovereignty, enhancing trust in national data handling, and laying the foundation for a more secure digital economy.
