Algiers — Algeria is preparing to inaugurate Africa’s largest research and development (R&D) center, a landmark project designed to accelerate national innovation and strengthen the country’s digital economy. The announcement was made by Sid Ali Zerrouki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, during the opening of the 4th E-Commerce and Online Services Exhibition (ECSEL EXPO) in Algiers.
Joined by senior officials including Amel Abdellatif, Minister of Domestic Trade and National Market Regulation, Noureddine Ouadah, Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises, and Meriem Benmouloud, High Commissioner for Digitalization, Zerrouki highlighted the center’s role as a strategic pillar for technological advancement and youth empowerment.
A Hub for Innovation and Global Collaboration
The new R&D center will serve as an open innovation space for young researchers and developers to turn ideas into viable projects that contribute to Algeria’s economic diversification. Zerrouki noted that the government is finalizing partnership agreements with leading global technology firms, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and advanced research collaboration.
“This initiative will make Algeria a major hub for technological innovation in Africa,” Zerrouki stated. “It will allow our youth to transform ideas into solutions that strengthen the national economy.”
Building a Knowledge-Based Economy
Minister Ouadah revealed that the government will soon sign an agreement with Algeria Venture, the national startup accelerator, to design specialized programs in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies. These programs will be developed in partnership with local enterprises to establish a solid foundation for a knowledge-driven economy.
Meanwhile, Minister Abdellatif underscored the importance of digitizing trade and administrative services, alongside efforts to promote electronic payment adoption through public awareness campaigns and collaboration with banks.
A Strategic Leap for Algeria’s Tech Future
The new R&D center represents a major milestone in Algeria’s digital transformation journey. It aligns with the government’s long-term vision to modernize industries, strengthen startup ecosystems, and position Algeria as a continental leader in innovation, AI, and digital entrepreneurship.
