Thunes and Ecobank Group Partner to Expand Instant Payments Across Africa

Lomé — October 31, 2025:
Thunes, the global payments infrastructure company, and the Ecobank Group, Africa’s leading pan-African financial institution, have announced a landmark collaboration to enable instant cross-border payments for millions of individuals and businesses across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The partnership builds upon a 2024 memorandum of understanding between Ecobank and TransferTo (Thunes’ parent company), aimed at transforming financial access and accelerating digital payments across the continent.

Transforming Cross-Border Financial Access

Through this partnership, Ecobank and Thunes will integrate their banking and fintech infrastructures, allowing users to send, receive, and manage money instantly and securely across borders. The initiative promises faster settlements, simplified liquidity access, and greater financial inclusion, unlocking new opportunities for entrepreneurs, families, and communities to participate in the digital economy.

The rollout will expand gradually across Ecobank’s 32-country footprint, following local regulatory frameworks in each market. Customers will gain access to Thunes’ Direct Global Network, which connects over 130 countries, reaching 7 billion mobile wallets and bank accounts worldwide.

Driving Africa’s Digital Economy

The first phase of implementation has launched in Togo, where Ecobank customers can now receive instant international payments from global remittance partners. This milestone signals the partnership’s readiness for broader deployment across Africa.

Peter De Caluwe, Co-Founder and CEO of Thunes, said:

“This collaboration marks a major development in how we power payments across Africa. Thunes’ solutions and Ecobank’s reach are a perfect match—together we’re delivering faster, more reliable access to liquidity and creating new pathways for growth across Sub-Saharan Africa.”

Jeremy Awori, CEO of Ecobank Group, added:

“Our partnership with Thunes aligns with Ecobank’s mission to provide borderless banking and drive financial inclusion across Africa. By merging our robust infrastructure with Thunes’ innovative network, we’re expanding real-time financial access for millions and accelerating the growth of Africa’s digital economy.”

A Step Toward Borderless Finance

By uniting fintech innovation with pan-African banking reach, this collaboration represents a significant leap toward borderless, real-time financial connectivity, supporting Africa’s growing role in global digital trade and inclusive economic development.
