Egypt Approves IoT Services for Smart Vehicles, Advancing Intelligent Transport and Automotive Innovation

Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has approved the launch of Internet of Things (IoT) services for smart vehicles, marking a significant leap in the country’s intelligent transport and smart mobility strategy. The decision allows automakers to activate secure, regulated IoT features—such as navigation, tracking, diagnostics, and emergency assistance—while ensuring the protection of user data and privacy.

Aligned with the Digital Egypt strategy, the approval supports Egypt’s broader ambition to localize advanced automotive technologies and enhance digital services for citizens. Leading brands authorized to roll out IoT-enabled systems include OnStar (General Motors), Mansour MG Automotive, Global Auto (BMW), Alpha Ezz Elarab (Volvo, Aston Martin, Lotus), EIM (Zeekr, BAIC), Egyptian Automotive & Trading Co. (Audi, Škoda), and SMG Engineering Automotive Co. (Porsche, Scania).

The NTRA stated that integrating IoT into vehicles will elevate driving safety, comfort, and connectivity through features like real-time communication, optimized routing, rapid emergency alerts, and improved traffic management. These developments form a foundation for Egypt’s evolving smart mobility ecosystem and reinforce the country’s commitment to digital transformation and personal data protection.

This initiative aligns closely with Egypt’s National Automotive Industry Development Programme, which aims to position the country as a regional manufacturing hub with a target of 100,000 vehicles annually. The programme mandates rising local value-added content—up to 60 percent—and offers performance-based incentives for companies that expand production, invest in local supply chains, or meet environmental and development benchmarks over its seven-year timeframe.
