MWC25 Doha: Experts Warn of Rising Cyber Threats to 5G Networks

Cybersecurity and telecom experts at MWC25 Doha underscored the urgency of monitoring and mitigating cyber risks associated with next-generation 5G networks. Speaking during a dedicated panel session, specialists highlighted that the rapid expansion of 5G has introduced new layers of complexity, requiring unified frameworks and stronger national cybersecurity strategies.

The discussion focused on safeguarding high-value assets within telecom companies, identifying evolving 5G-related cyber threats, and providing practical insights to guide decision-makers. Experts warned that inconsistent threat models across different stakeholders increase vulnerabilities, stressing the need for a shared language and coordinated approach to defend critical infrastructure.

Among the key participants were Dana Al Abdullah, Policy Affairs Director at the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), and Tim Hart, Head of Research and Consulting at the GSMA. Al Abdullah noted that the session explored major concerns around 5G security and emphasized the technology’s central role in national infrastructure resilience. She also announced the launch of a joint research paper by the NCSA and GSMA, offering guidance on monitoring and addressing emerging 5G cyber threats.
