Sri Lanka’s Dialog Axiata announces deal with UPI

Sri Lankan operator Dialog Axiata has announced a strategic partnership with UnionPay International (UPI), one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing global payment networks.

Dialog said the collaboration will strengthen the capabilities of its fintech arm, Dialog Finance, enabling a wider range of digital payment products, expanded national acceptance, and access to global-grade payment experiences for Sri Lankan consumers and merchants.

The initiative is expected to support high-growth sectors including e-commerce, mobility, travel, retail, and MSMEs, while advancing the country’s push toward cashless transactions and broader financial inclusion.

UnionPay International operates across more than 180 countries and regions and has been expanding its global footprint through partnerships with banks and payment infrastructure providers.

UPI has been particularly active across Asia. In July 2025, UnionPay cards issued by Vietnamese banks became linkable with Alipay and WeChat Pay. Earlier in the year, UnionPay partnered with Malaysia’s Bank Simpanan Nasional to launch UnionPay QR payments nationwide.

This is not UnionPay’s first engagement in Sri Lanka. In 2021, SLT-Mobitel’s mobile money platform, mCash, partnered with UPI to enhance digital payment enablement across the country.

The Dialog partnership signals a new phase in Sri Lanka’s digital payments ecosystem, connecting local fintech capabilities with a globally scaled payment network.
