Omantel upgrades mobile network to 5G SA

Omantel has successfully upgraded its mobile network to support 5G Standalone (SA), marking a major milestone in Oman’s digital infrastructure. The upgrade strengthens the operator’s ability to deliver advanced services and support the next wave of digital technologies across the country.

With 5G SA now in place, Omantel can roll out a new generation of use cases, including Voice over 5G, tailored network solutions for enterprises, RedCap-based IoT services, and ultra-low latency applications designed for mission-critical environments.

Samy Ahmed Al Ghassany, Chief of Technology and Digital at Omantel, said the move will accelerate innovation and expand digital transformation opportunities for individuals, businesses, and industries nationwide. He noted that Omantel’s role as a regional digital powerhouse and local innovation enabler underpins its commitment to keeping Oman at the forefront of connectivity.

The operator confirmed that the transition to 5G SA was completed seamlessly, with no service disruption for customers.

Omantel first introduced 5G in Oman as a fixed-wireless access service in December 2019, followed by the launch of non-standalone 5G in February 2021. The move to full standalone architecture represents the next evolution of its mobile network.
