PTA warns public against illegal online content

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has urged the public to remain vigilant against illegal content circulating on digital platforms.

In a statement, the Authority reaffirmed that freedom of expression is a fundamental right of every individual. However, it stressed that promoting or disseminating unlawful material under the guise of free speech is unacceptable and subject to legal action.

PTA highlighted that content involving blasphemy or disrespect towards religions or sacred personalities constitutes a punishable offence under the law. It also warned that hate speech and propaganda targeting national institutions fall within the scope of criminal liability.

The Authority further stated that the circulation of obscene or immoral material, as well as the spread of fake news, is a criminal offence and will be dealt with in accordance with existing laws.

Separately, PTA announced a new initiative aimed at helping overseas Pakistanis keep their mobile SIM cards secure while abroad. The measure allows expatriates to prevent their SIMs from being blocked during extended stays outside the country.

Under the initiative, subscribers can inform their respective cellular companies and pay the applicable charges to retain ownership of their SIMs for a specified period. The facility ensures uninterrupted access to telecom services and enables overseas Pakistanis to remain connected with family and friends in Pakistan.

The Authority said the step reflects its commitment to providing continuous and reliable telecom services for citizens both at home and abroad.
