Egypt signs record $3.5bn mobile spectrum deal

Egypt has signed the largest spectrum agreement in its mobile telecommunications history, allocating 410 megahertz of additional spectrum to mobile operators in a deal valued at $3.5 billion, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.

The allocation, equivalent to all spectrum released over the past three decades, forms part of Egypt’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at expanding connectivity, improving service quality, and supporting long-term sector growth. Communications and Information Technology Minister Amr Talaat described the agreement as a strategic move to accelerate digital adoption and enhance access to digital services nationwide.

The government highlighted ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, including approximately $6 billion spent in recent years to upgrade networks, with $3.5 billion directed toward fixed broadband development. These efforts have contributed to a sixteen-fold increase in average internet speeds since 2019 and helped Egypt maintain the top position in Africa for fixed broadband speed.

Following the latest allocation, total mobile spectrum availability in Egypt has increased to 550 megahertz from 272 megahertz in 2019, supporting network capacity expansion and future applications after the country’s launch of fifth-generation services in June 2025.
