Uncertainty has emerged in Pakistan following reports suggesting that the social media monitoring firewall, installed in 2024 to regulate online content, may have been removed. Both the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Pakistan and the Ministry of Interior Pakistan have remained silent for the past two days, fueling speculation about potential policy changes or technical failures.
Telecom operators have dismissed the reports, asserting that the firewall remains fully operational and that claims of its shutdown are inaccurate. Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) noted that the authority has no direct role in the firewall project and that any clarification should come from the Ministry of Interior. PTA highlighted that its web management system has been functioning for nearly two decades to control grey traffic and block immoral or illegal online content.
