SK Telecom Sets Out Mid- to Long-Term Vision for 6G Network Evolution

SK Telecom has outlined its strategic roadmap for the evolution toward 6G networks, detailing how it plans to transition from advanced 5G capabilities to next-generation connectivity over the coming decade.

The South Korean operator emphasised that 6G will not simply be a speed upgrade, but a structural transformation of network architecture. It expects 6G to integrate advanced AI-native capabilities, sensing technologies, and ultra-low latency communications to support immersive services such as extended reality, digital twins, autonomous mobility and advanced robotics.

Central to SK Telecom’s vision is the development of an AI-driven network framework. The company aims to embed artificial intelligence deeply into network operations, enabling automated optimisation, predictive maintenance and intelligent traffic management. This AI-native approach is expected to enhance network efficiency while reducing operational costs.

SK Telecom also highlighted the importance of integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, including satellite communications, to provide seamless connectivity. This convergence will support ubiquitous coverage and resilience, particularly in remote or underserved areas.

The operator plans to evolve its infrastructure in stages, leveraging advanced 5G standalone (SA) deployments as a foundation. It sees 5G-Advanced as a bridge toward 6G, introducing capabilities such as improved uplink performance, enhanced energy efficiency and expanded spectrum utilisation.

Energy sustainability is another core focus. SK Telecom signalled that 6G networks must be designed with lower power consumption and smarter resource management, aligning with global environmental targets while supporting growing data demands.

The company is actively participating in global 6G standardisation efforts and research collaborations to shape early specifications. It believes international cooperation will be critical to ensuring interoperability and accelerating commercial readiness.

Commercial 6G deployment is expected around 2030, in line with broader industry timelines. In the interim, SK Telecom intends to expand research, testbeds and ecosystem partnerships to refine core technologies and use cases.

By framing 6G as an AI-native, sustainability-driven and convergence-focused evolution, SK Telecom is positioning itself to lead the transition into the next era of intelligent connectivity.
