Nepal Police has established a new AI and Advanced Analytics Cell, known as the AI Cell, as part of efforts to counter security threats arising from the misuse of digital technologies.
The unit has been created to monitor disinformation circulating on social media platforms and manage harmful content through enhanced surveillance mechanisms.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal inaugurated the AI Cell at Nepal Police Headquarters on Monday. During the launch, he urged law enforcement officials to regulate fake news, particularly in relation to elections, and to ensure strict enforcement of the election code of conduct.
Minister Aryal expressed confidence that the new unit would help prevent untoward incidents stemming from online platforms and strengthen overall digital security oversight.
According to Nepal Police, the AI Cell will focus on risk reduction and bolster security management by introducing technical capabilities within the force. The unit is also expected to analyse data collected from CCTV cameras installed in sensitive and critical locations, identifying trends and potential threats in real time.
By integrating artificial intelligence and advanced analytics into its operations, Nepal Police aims to enhance monitoring capabilities and respond more effectively to emerging digital and physical security risks.
