ICASA warns South African ISPs and fiber providers to renew licenses

ICASA has issued a warning to fiber network operators and internet service providers (ISPs) in South Africa to submit license renewal applications within the required timeframe—no earlier than 12 months and no later than six months before expiry—or risk losing operating rights.

The notice applies to Individual Electronic Communications Network Service (I-ECNS) and Individual Electronic Communications Service (I-ECS) license holders, including Axxess, MTN, Vodacom, Rain, Webafrica, Seacom, Broadband Infraco, and Sentech. Compliance with the Electronic Communications Act, including maintaining at least 30% ownership by historically disadvantaged South Africans, is also required. Past enforcement, such as StarSat’s shutdown, highlights ICASA’s strict approach.
