Egypt Launches Wa3i.net Platform to Combat Rising Cyber Threats for 98 Million Users

The Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has officially launched Wa3i.net (Arabic for “Aware”), a comprehensive digital awareness platform designed to protect the country’s rapidly expanding online population. Unveiled as the center of the national Digital Citizenship and Online Protection initiative, the platform aims to equip nearly 98 million internet users—roughly 72% of the population—with the tools to navigate the digital world safely. The launch coincides with an alarming 44% rise in phishing and social engineering attacks across the region, with approximately one-quarter of Egyptian users encountering online threats in the past year.

Wa3i.net serves as a specialized Arabic-language knowledge hub providing age-appropriate content for children, teenagers, parents, and educators. Developed in collaboration with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM), UNICEF, and the UNDP, the platform focuses on critical areas such as personal data protection, managing cyberbullying, and identifying misinformation. By integrating digital safety into school curricula and conducting nationwide workshops, authorities hope to establish a “first line of defense” that reduces reliance on technical fixes by fostering a society-wide culture of digital literacy.
