Oman Unveils 2030 Digital Roadmap: Provincial Tech Hubs and National AI Platform

Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched an ambitious digital economy strategy for 2026–2030, aiming to decentralize technology and cement the Sultanate’s tech sovereignty. A flagship initiative of the new plan is the establishment of digital transformation centres across every governorate, tailored to meet the specific economic needs of each region.

The government is also moving toward high-tech autonomy with plans to develop a national predictive intelligence platform utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) to guide state decision-making. Complementing this is a push for “homegrown” infrastructure, including the local assembly of servers and cloud equipment to reduce international dependency. Additional projects include an integrated cloud for satellite data and the potential development of a national payment card to bolster financial independence.

These plans build on a successful five-year foundation (2021–2025) during which Oman digitized over 2,200 government services and processed 29 million annual digital transactions. With RO79 million already invested in AI and 11,000 citizens trained via the ‘Makin’ initiative, the digital economy contributed RO800 million to Oman’s GDP in 2023. The ultimate goal is for the digital sector to represent 10% of the national GDP by 2040.
