42% of Telecom Sites in Pakistan Operate Without Generators, PTA Reports Internet Slowdown Causes

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has pointed to issues with telecom infrastructure as the main cause of internet slowdowns across Pakistan, particularly following the use of virtual private networks (VPNs). A recent PTA report revealed that power outages, outdated infrastructure, and limited fiberization contribute to the ongoing issue.

The PTA report highlighted that 42% of telecom sites in Pakistan are functioning without generators, resulting in over 21,000 sites experiencing power outages. This leads to significant disruptions in both internet and telecom services, especially during power loadshedding periods. Additionally, over 24,885 telecom sites have generators, but these lack sufficient backup power. The report further stated that critical equipment, including generators, has been stolen from more than 739 telecom sites in recent years. Furthermore, the PTA noted that 147 sites have been targeted by terrorist attacks over the last five years, damaging telecom infrastructure and causing additional disruption to internet services.

Despite these challenges, the PTA emphasized that the 18-year-old web management system in place is primarily designed to monitor gray traffic and does not play a role in the reduction of internet speeds.
