The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is already planning for the launch of 6G mobile technology, estimating a potential $1 billion in revenue for the state, according to Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman of the telecoms regulator. While 6G is still in the development stage, the current focus is on defining the spectrum policy for the new technology.
The GSMA predicts that 6G will become the dominant mobile technology in the 2030s. In the meantime, 5G is still in its early stages, representing only 2.46% of Nigeria’s 164.9 million mobile subscribers as of December 2024, just over two years after its launch. The majority of users are still on 4G (47.2%), followed by 3G (8.75%) and 2G (41.59%).
In terms of coverage, 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies reach 94.1%, 89.4%, 84.2%, and 11.8% of Nigeria’s population, respectively, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). As Nigeria looks to the future, the telecom industry is focused on preparing for the next generation of mobile technology.
