Beyon, Bahrain’s largest communications and information technology company, has appointed Aecom as the master planner for its ambitious Digital City project, with an investment of $700 million. This appointment marks a key milestone in the creation of a premier technology and innovation ecosystem in Bahrain’s Hamala area.

Aecom will lead the comprehensive planning and design of the Digital City, ensuring the integration of commercial, technological, and lifestyle components, such as landscaped open spaces and essential urban amenities. A key priority in the planning process will be to seamlessly integrate the Digital City with Bahrain’s existing and proposed transport infrastructure.

The Bahrain Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA) will play an active role in incorporating the project into the broader urban expansion strategy. This will ensure the efficient integration of internal traffic systems and connections to major transport networks, allowing for optimal planning that supports future growth.

The agreement was signed at a special ceremony at Beyon’s headquarters, attended by key figures including Andrew Kvaalseth, Beyon’s CEO, Faisal Al Jalahma, Chairman of the Digital City Development Company, Engineer Ahmed Al Khayat, CEO of Bahrain’s UPDA, and David Border, Aecom’s Head of Buildings + Places in Bahrain.

Al Jalahma expressed that Aecom’s appointment is a crucial step towards realizing the Digital City’s vision of becoming a thriving technological hub. Designed to attract foreign direct investment in technology, commerce, and R&D, the project aims to create high-value jobs for Bahrain’s future.

“We are confident that with Aecom’s expertise and the support of key authorities, Beyon Digital City will accelerate Bahrain’s digital economy and position the Kingdom as a leading destination for innovation and enterprise,” he added.

Al Khayat emphasized the importance of aligning the Digital City project with Bahrain’s broader urban planning goals. “At UPDA, we are committed to collaborating closely with Aecom and other stakeholders to develop a project that enhances connectivity, improves trade exchange, and fosters new business growth,” he said.

The Digital City development will incorporate a multimodal transportation network, including an automated tram system, as well as extensive landscaped areas and open spaces, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability.

David Border from Aecom stated, “We are honored to be entrusted with the master planning of Beyon Digital City. Our approach will focus on sustainable urban design, efficient transport integration, and creating a dynamic, people-centered environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.”

Beyon Digital City is poised to become a landmark project, reinforcing Bahrain’s position as a regional digital and innovation hub.
