Sri Lanka Court Orders TRCSL to Block Websites Publishing Cargills Bank Data

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered Sri Lanka’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) to block all websites and social media accounts distributing illegally obtained data from Cargills Bank PLC. This follows a petition filed by the bank under the Online Safety Act, addressing a data breach involving sensitive customer information.

The order requires all Internet Service Providers in Sri Lanka to comply, and the court has scheduled a return notice for April 21. The breach, which reportedly contained national identity details, prompted Cargills Bank to take immediate action, reinforcing security protocols and engaging cybersecurity experts to assess the situation.

Cargills Bank confirmed that its operations remain unaffected, with no disruption to services. The bank assured customers that it is committed to maintaining high cybersecurity standards and protecting its systems and data integrity. The data breach has raised concerns among journalists and digital rights activists about privacy and security.
