A recent surge in AI applications transforming selfies into Studio Ghibli-style artwork has taken social media by storm, but UAE cybersecurity experts are sounding alarms over privacy risks and potential data misuse.
Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, cautioned that using unofficial apps could lead to breaches or leaks of personal data. While acknowledging AI’s benefits, he emphasized that users need to be vigilant about how their personal data is handled by these platforms.
He called for stronger cybersecurity standards across digital platforms and urged individuals to exercise caution with their data.
Media professionals, too, are voicing concerns. Emirati journalist Adel Al-Rashed warned that free apps, often imitating trusted platforms, could exploit user data. He recommended that users stick to verified applications, highlighting that paid services like ChatGPT’s Pro edition offer more robust privacy protections.
Despite these warnings, social media influencer Ibrahim Al-Thahli acknowledged the excitement AI brings to creative expression. He encouraged users to focus on education and engage with the technology safely, aligning with the UAE’s broader goal of building a resilient digital economy.
