Bangladesh Bank Allows Taka Payments for International Roaming Services

Bangladesh Bank has issued a circular permitting mobile operators to accept payments in local currency (taka) for international roaming services. The new directive aims to simplify the payment process for Bangladeshi travelers. Customers can pay up to Tk 6,000 per trip and a maximum of Tk 30,000 annually for roaming services.

To use this service, travelers must provide a valid visa and travel ticket and activate roaming at least one week before departure. The circular also outlines conditions for remitting payments to foreign network operators through authorized banks to comply with foreign exchange regulations.

This move replaces the previous requirement for foreign currency payments via international credit or debit cards, which posed challenges for those without access to such payment instruments. Industry experts view the move as a step forward in streamlining roaming services and boosting value-added services in Bangladesh’s telecom sector.

The change is expected to benefit frequent travelers and improve mobile operators’ ability to meet customer needs without relying on foreign payment methods.
