GSMA and Pleias launch AI language model to bridge Africa’s digital language gap

The GSMA, in collaboration with Pleias, has introduced a new large language model (LLM) aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of African languages in artificial intelligence systems.

The model, known as LID, is designed to improve language identification and support AI applications across a diverse range of African languages. By enhancing linguistic coverage, the initiative aims to make digital services more accessible and inclusive for millions of users across the continent.

Language gaps have been a major barrier to AI adoption in Africa, where many widely spoken local languages are not adequately supported by existing models. Improving language representation is critical for enabling services such as voice assistants, customer support systems, and digital content platforms.

The initiative reflects growing recognition of the importance of linguistic diversity in AI development, particularly in emerging markets where local language support can significantly impact adoption and usability.

As digital services continue to expand across Africa, ensuring that AI systems are inclusive and locally relevant will be key to unlocking broader economic and social benefits.

Editor’s Note:
Language inclusion is a critical frontier in AI development. Efforts like this highlight the importance of building locally relevant models to drive adoption and digital inclusion across diverse markets.
