TECNO Partners with Universities to Enhance Universal Tone Technology for Accurate Saudi Skin Tone Representation

TECNO, the innovative technology brand, has announced a collaboration with the University of Leeds in the UK and Dar Al-Hekma University in Saudi Arabia to advance its Universal Tone technology, ensuring the accurate representation of Saudi skin tones in mobile imaging. This partnership aims to refine TECNO’s AI-powered Universal Tone technology, promoting inclusive and diverse skin tone representation, particularly in emerging markets like Saudi Arabia.

Launched in 2023, TECNO’s Universal Tone technology is a breakthrough in mobile imaging, designed to authentically capture the full spectrum of human diversity. The latest collaboration seeks to expand the skin tone database for Saudi consumers, enhancing the Universal Tone algorithm for more accurate and inclusive imaging. This research will gradually extend to other Middle Eastern countries, further broadening the scope of TECNO’s commitment to diverse skin tone representation across the region.

Leading the research is Professor Kaida Xiao, Technical Advisor of TECNO ColourScience of Skintone Image Technology and Professor in Colour and Imaging Science at the University of Leeds. He is joined by Professor Ahmed Nasseraldin, Assistant Professor at Dar Al-Hekma University, who brings regional expertise and insights into the Saudi market.

The Saudi collaboration focuses on developing a comprehensive skin tone database specific to Saudi consumers, collecting and analyzing a wide range of skin tones to refine TECNO’s technology. This initiative also involves creating new skin tone patches, building upon the existing global database of 268 patches, specifically tailored to the Saudi market to enhance color accuracy.

Professor Xiao expressed excitement over the initiative, stating, “We are thrilled to collaborate with TECNO in understanding and capturing Saudi skin tones, ensuring that consumers are authentically represented on their devices.” Professor Nasseraldin highlighted the cultural importance of accurately portraying Saudi skin tones, underscoring the project’s significance in capturing the region’s unique identity.

Saudi Arabia’s diverse range of skin tones—from pale to dark brown—reflects its vibrant cultural heritage, and TECNO is committed to ensuring these tones are represented with accuracy in its imaging technology. This collaboration positions Saudi Arabia as the focal point of TECNO’s research, with findings expected to benefit the broader Middle Eastern market.

TECNO’s “Glocalization” strategy is designed to adapt global technological innovations to regional needs. This collaboration with top academic institutions, including previous partnerships with the University of Leeds and NTU Singapore, exemplifies TECNO’s dedication to addressing the diverse imaging needs of consumers worldwide.

The launch of TECNO’s Universal Tone technology was accompanied by the successful #ToneProud campaign in November, highlighting the brand’s commitment to skin tone diversity. TECNO’s ever-expanding 268-skin tone patch color card is one of the most comprehensive in the industry, enabling users to embrace and celebrate their natural beauty.

Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO, emphasized, “Refining Universal Tone technology for the Saudi market is a key step in our mission to set a global standard for inclusive imaging. Partnering with leading local institutions ensures that our technology aligns with the needs of local consumers.” TECNO remains committed to enhancing mobile imaging technologies to create an inclusive experience that celebrates the beauty of diversity.
