The 5G Innovation Lab at Dhofar University’s College of Engineering was officially launched on Tuesday, under the patronage of Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah Al-Ibrahim, Vice Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees. The lab, developed in partnership with Ooredoo and ZTE Corporation, aims to foster innovation in education, knowledge transfer, and technical research, positioning the university as a key player in developing the next generation of technological leaders.
In his statement, the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees highlighted the significance of the new facility, noting that its opening aligns with the university’s strategic vision for 2021-2031. He emphasized the lab’s role in promoting creativity and innovation in the technology sector, stating that it would contribute to decision-making processes and benefit stakeholders in the fields of communications and technology. He further expressed hope that the lab would become a leading center for innovation, shaping the future of the nation by preparing students to serve Oman through education, research, and training.
Professor Amer Al-Rawas, Vice Chancellor of Dhofar University, shared his enthusiasm about the launch, calling the 5G Innovation Lab a pivotal center for education, research, and training. He emphasized that the lab would provide students, faculty, and professionals with the opportunity to explore the potential of 5G technology and the Internet of Things. This initiative, he added, supports Dhofar University’s mission to integrate the latest technologies into the curriculum and produce graduates equipped to contribute to Oman’s growth in alignment with Oman Vision 2040.
Bassem Yousef Al-Ibrahim, CEO of Ooredoo, expressed the company’s pride in its role in the project, calling the collaboration with Dhofar University and ZTE a significant step toward shaping Oman’s digital future. He highlighted the lab’s potential to empower local talent, drive innovation, and advance technological progress, supporting Oman’s strategic goals.
Meng Zhang, Director of Ooredoo Group Business Unit at ZTE, praised the collaboration, stating that ZTE is proud to support the initiative. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning and talent development in the telecommunications sector, underscoring the company’s commitment to fostering innovation and contributing to Oman’s growth.
