Global Internet Speed Rankings: Africa Lags Behind, UAE Leads Mobile Connectivity

Speedtest by Ookla, the global leader in Internet connectivity intelligence, has released its updated Speedtest Global Index, ranking mobile and fixed network performances worldwide.

Based on millions of tests from consumers using the Speedtest app across over 200 countries, the index evaluates networks based on two key performance indicators: download speed and latency, which reflects a network’s responsiveness.

In the latest December 2024 update, Tunisia ranks 4th in Africa and 90th globally with a median mobile download speed of 27.12 Mbps. Its median transfer rate is 14.09 Mbps, with a latency of 20 ms.

Among other African nations, South Africa holds the top position on the continent (61st globally) with a mobile download speed of 9.17 Mbps. Despite being the best in Africa, this is still far below the global average of 11.82 Mbps for the same period.

Morocco follows in 64th place globally with a speed of 45.67 Mbps, while Kenya ranks 85th with 28.85 Mbps. Egypt holds the 92nd spot at 24.20 Mbps, sharing the same speed as Algeria, which ranks 95th.

These rankings highlight the ongoing connectivity challenges in Africa. Despite progress in recent years, the continent still lags behind the global standards for download and data transfer speeds, mainly due to limited infrastructure, technology investment, and the high cost of Internet access in rural regions.

In the mobile connectivity sector, the United Arab Emirates takes the lead with a remarkable speed of 453.87 Mbps, followed by Qatar at 383.50 Mbps and Kuwait with 257.30 Mbps. Bulgaria and Denmark complete the top 5 with speeds of 187.27 Mbps and 169.26 Mbps, respectively.

As for fixed broadband, Singapore stands at the forefront with 330.98 Mbps, significantly ahead of Hong Kong (306.58 Mbps) and the UAE (304.24 Mbps), which round out the top three. France, now in 4th place, records a speed of 279.22 Mbps, while Chile completes the top 5 with 276.29 Mbps.
