Bahrain’s public transportation system is embracing digital transformation with the complete installation of smart meters in taxis across the kingdom. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, is part of a broader effort to enhance land transportation services while ensuring fairness, transparency, and efficiency.
Fatima Al Dhaen, Under-Secretary for Land and Post at the Ministry, emphasized the importance of integrating the latest digital developments into the public transport sector. The smart meters provide real-time data on trip routes, driver details, and fare calculations, ensuring accurate and transparent pricing. Additionally, the meters are designed to support electronic payment systems, including bank cards and future integration with BenefitPay.
The initiative also aligns with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, aiming to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of land transport infrastructure. The ministry continues to foster public-private partnerships to improve services and promote digital transformation. Al Dhaen expressed her gratitude to the taxi drivers for their cooperation in the smooth implementation of the project, particularly thanking the Public Transport Drivers Society for their support.
In the past, there were concerns among some taxi drivers regarding privacy issues related to the installation of smart meters. However, the project has moved forward, and the ministry encourages passengers to report any issues related to taxi services, such as fare disputes or driver behavior, via email or phone.
With the completion of the smart meter installation, Bahrain’s taxi services are set to offer a more transparent and efficient experience for both drivers and passengers.
